San Francisco photos
San Francisco made me feel like we were in Europe. Everything was small and close together, with lots of everything in a small space.
We walked toward North Beach, and here are three pictures from that walk.
We were in town for a wedding that was held at the outdoor Mountain Theatre on Mt. Tam. For the first time in many days, the weather was cold, windy, and foggy. Just when we started to think the sky was brightening, another blast of fog would roll in off the mountaintop:
Everyone held onto their good spirits, including the bride and groom. Though their lips were blue by the end, they smiled and mingled as if the day were sunny and beautiful.
The next day we took a trip to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, where Tom and his 7-year-old nephew got this picture of the birds in the aviary and a small section of the bay. The sitting brown bird on the right is a curlew. I can't remember what the standing black-and-white one is. It was a treat to see the birds so closely.
The hallucinatory "jellies" (known to normal people as jellyfish) were everyone's favorite. They are presented with ornate frames around their tank windows and called "living art." Hmm.
Back in San Francisco, on another walk (this time on a brilliantly sunny day) to North Beach, we took these pictures:
(The one above is a reflection in a window as I looked into a closed cafe.)
Later, we drove through Napa Valley to hike in a redwood forest. It was in Napa Valley State Park.
We saw some beautiful red-limbed trees up on the hilltop. I haven't looked them up yet to see what they were, but with their peeling bark they reminded me of the madronas we have here in Seattle:
And here are a few other things that caught my eye around town and on the coast.
